Безусловно, самый простой способ добавить наложение текста - это использовать класс MapLabel из https://github.com/googlemaps/js-map-label

В последнем API (v3) рекомендуется использовать async defer и обратный вызов при загрузке API Карт.

Чтобы сделать это, вам нужно определить оверлейный класс изнутри (или после) инициализации, когда класс google был определен. В противном случае вы получите ошибки google not defined.
