Не могу включить использование .htaccess в Apache2

У меня VPS работает под управлением Ubuntu 12.04. У меня установлен Apache2, и он без проблем обслуживает веб-страницы с виртуального хоста. Теперь мне нужно включить файл .htaccess, но я не могу заставить его работать.

мой файл .htaccess находится в том же каталоге, что и файл index.php, который показывает Apache. Я добавил данные мусора в файл .htaccess, чтобы при его работе он отображал 500 Internal Server Error.

редактирование /etc/Apache2/sites-available/my-virtual-Host-path и изменение блока Directory на целевой /var/www/my-virtual-Host-path и установка AllowOverride All в этом файле теперь позволяют запускать файл .htaccess. 

Я предполагаю, что файл /etc/Apache2/sites-available/default используется только тогда, когда вы не используете виртуальный хост.
